About Yara

New German plant confirmed Yara as Europe's leading CO2 supplier

On July 1, 2004, Yara opened its new world-class CO2 purification and liquefaction plant in Dormagen, Germany. This strengthened Yara's position as the largest producer and distributor of CO2 to the European food and beverage market.

The new purification and liquefaction plant was set up to supply the growing German food and beverage market with high-purity CO2. Most of the food-grade CO2 was earmarked for use in the production of soft drinks and in the brewing sector, as well as for process cooling and freezing in the food sector.

The Dormagen facility came onstream with a production capacity of 150,000 tons a year, making it Germany's second-largest CO2 plant. When the plant began operating, the European market for liquid CO2 was estimated to be 2.5 million tons, with the German market representing more than 25 percent.

A cost-efficient operation strategically located at the center of the German market, Dormagen strengthened Yara's production base and its position in the European CO2 value chain.

Yara is the leading supplier of CO2 in Europe, with CO2 plants in Norway, the Netherlands and Italy, and has a unique shipping and distribution system with dedicated ships and terminals throughout Europe. Building on a strong in-house knowledge base of industrial gas applications, Yara is one of the leading suppliers of applications to CO2 end-users. Additionally, Yara has long-term contracts for the purchase of third-party products from other producers in the United Kingdom and continental Europe.
