2009: Yara Sluiskil receives safety and environmental award

In March 2009, Yara was awarded the first ever Green Leaf Award for its Sluiskil plant in the Netherlands.

Established by the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA), the award aims at recognizing a production site for its contributions and innovations to enhance safety, health and environmental performance.

The Sluiskil plant, which has been in operation since 1929, has an outstanding safety record, dramatically reduced its emissions of NOx and N2O, and is one of the world's most energy-efficient fertilizer plants.

In recent years some important measures have been taken to improve safety, health and environment at the plant. The use of Yara’s catalyst technology, reducing N2O emissions by 70 to 90 percent and NOx emissions by 85 percent; introduction of a behavior-based safety program, selected as a showcase for the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment; and health improvements in the workforce: encouraging all employees to exercise and eat healthy and giving them access to a lifestyle consultant.

The Green Leaf Award was presented to Yara Sluiskil at an international safety and environmental gathering in Bahrain, in competition with 37 production sites in 20 different countries.
