The world today

According to the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (new OECD report), outdoor air pollution could cause between 6 to 9 million premature deaths a year by 2060. As a result of sick days, medical bills and reduced agricultural output the cost are estimated at around USD 2.6 trillion annually, which is 1% of global Gross Domestic Product.

What kind of additional solutions and services could Yara offer to eliminate air pollution for future industry and transport?

Technologies should help Yara expand its portfolio of emission reduction solutions: New emission types

• New equipment/solution to prevent emissions
• Reclaim/use of emission waste
• Improve existing solutions that address multiple pollutants for smaller emission sources

The burning of fossil fuels releases emissions like NOx (nitrogen oxides),  SOx (Sulphur oxides), Greenhouse gases (CO2 and N2O) and particulate matter (PM) from exhausts which are harmful to human health and the environment, causing ground-level smog, acid rain and global warming.
Examples of existing solutions delivered by Yara:

  • SOx emission reduction: Yara Marine Technology SOx Scrubbers
  • NOx emission reduction:

o based on SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology for marine vessels
o SCR, SNCR (selective non-catalytic reduction) and Hybrid NOx reduction systems for Industrial plants

  • NOx reducing reagents: 

o AdBlue/DEF/Arla32: high purity urea solution for NOx abatement in heavy duty vehicles, passenger cars and off-road machinery
o NOxCare: ammonia or urea, solid or in solution for industry and maritime
o N2O catalyst for in-situ reduction of laughing gas in nitric acid plants

  • Odour and H2S treatment

Solutions/Services/Technology/Products/Business model to prevent, reduce, capture or eliminate emissions from road and ship transport and from the industry (power plant, cement plant, waste to energy, etc.).
