Yara Sluiskil receives safety and environmental award

Mar 16, 2009
It is the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA) which has established the award, aimed at recognizing a production site for its contributions and innovations to enhance safety, health and environmental performance.
"After working systematically on improving our operations, and drastically reducing emissions, this award is highly appreciated, and also encouraging for our further efforts", says Marc Van Hijfte, plant manager at Yara Sluiskil.
The plant has been in operation since 1929, and is one of the ten most energy-efficient ammonia plants in the world. In recent years the 580 employees have worked continuously on improvements within safety, health and environment. Among the measures taken are:
  •          Reducing emissions: N2O-emissions reduced by 70-90 % and NOX emissions reduced by 85 %, using catalyst technology
  •          Increasing safety: Introduction of a behavior-based safety program, selected as a showcase for the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment
  •          Healthy workforce: Stimulating all employees to exercise and eat healthy, and access to life style consultant
Yara`s goal is to be the most energy-efficient company in the industry and to reduce its total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 25% compared with 2005. In 2008 the target for GHG emissions was reached, after emissions were cut by 30% compared with 2004, and energy consumption was reduced by 3.8% from 2007 to 2008.
The Green Leaf Award was given Yara Sluiskil at an international safety and environmental gathering in Bahrain, in competition with 37 production sites in 20 different countries.
