Authorities around the world are tightening air pollution standards and most engine manufacturers have responded with the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, which uses urea to neutralize harmful Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions.
"The benefits go beyond fuel efficiency."
Transport Company Director, Trevor Underwood
The operating fluid for the SCR system is called AdBlue® - or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) in North America. Yara's high purity urea solution for SCR vehicles is commercialized under the Air1 brand. Air1 is a solution in both senses of the word - a service package, and the liquid needed to turn NOx from diesel-powered vehicles into harmless water vapor and nitrogen.
The combination of SCR and AdBlue packs a one-two punch: NOx reductions of over 80 percent are achieved and overall fuel efficiency improves by about five percent compared to competing technologies. And on top of that, vehicles that use less fuel emit less CO2.
Besides cutting fuel costs and helping the environment, the Air1 solution offers other advantages - reliable supply and low maintenance mean that the move to this proven technology is painless. Air1 also offers storage and handling equipment. Dispensers are easy to access and simple to use, and filling up quickly becomes part of the weekly routine.
"A reliable supply of high quality AdBlue is essential to run an efficient business," says Trevor Underwood, Director of Road Transport Company Cool Solutions, based in Hull, England. "If I don't have the product, I can't operate my fleet."
Yara is the world's largest producer of AdBlue, selling the product on all five continents. We played a pioneering role in the market, beginning in the late 1990s by helping other stakeholders to establish the standard and develop the technology. Through AdBlue and NOxCare solutions our global clients remove NOx emissions equivalent to the total emissions of a country like the Netherlands.
And with lower CO2 emissions than competing solutions, fleet owners using AdBlue can enhance their green reputation while operating their business.
"We are safeguarding the environment," says Trevor. "And that's an important investment in the future."
