    During 2013 we continued to deliver on our growth ambition. 

    We delivered strong operational performance, yet our financial performance was below expectations, mostly due to weaker fertilizer prices. We added production capacity, expanded our operations and increased our total sales to a record high.

    Fertilizer sales

    In 2013 we sold 23.7 million tons of fertilizer worldwide. 

    We increased our overall mineral fertilizer sales volume by 14%. While our expansion in Brazil was an important driver, we also reached a 5% increase in deliveries outside Brazil. More than half of our crop nutrition sales consisted of differentiated and specialty products.

    Industrial sales

    We continued our progress in industrial and environmental solutions. 

    Our expansions in the North American market for NOx abatement solutions drove a 30% increase in total Air1 sales. We also made new investments to strengthen our position in the marine and industrial NOx abatement market and to bolster our unique CO2 supply concept.

    Global workforce

    At year-end 2013 we employed 9,759 people in more than 50 countries. 

    We grew our permanent workforce by 21% from 2012. We hired close to 1,000 external candidates worldwide, and our expansion in Brazil brought more than 1,200 new employees on board. Brazil now accounts for close to 26% of our workforce.
