Exhaust Gas Treatment in Marine Vessels

In October 2016, the IMO voted on stricter, global Sulphur oxides limit which will be implemented in 2020. It is known that Sulphur oxides (SOx) cause many deaths every year. Setting a global Sulphur oxides cap will have a positive effect on the air we breathe and save thousands of lives every year.

Feasibility studies show that there is sufficient supply of required fuel oil and suitable abatement technologies to help all vessels comply with a global legislation. Yara Marine Technologies has installed over 100 SOx removal inline scrubbers to maritime vessels, and continues to do so. Each inline scrubber can already remove SOx to the legal requirement that is to be implemented in 2020.

NOx Regulations

NOx emissions from shipping are increasingly regulated in NECAs (NOx Emission Control Areas). From 2016, new IMO Tier III requirements will require new builds to comply with NOx emission requirements in territorial waters. Canadian authorities and the United-States Environment Protection Agency (EPA) are already implementing a North American and U.S. Caribbean NECA imposing stringent NOx emission limits. Other NECAs will follow, as IMO regulations are adopted around the globe.

SOx Emissions

In the autumn of 2008, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the IMO agreed on the progressive reduction of maximum sulphur content in fuel used onboard. The limit applicable in Emission Control Areas will be reduced to 0.1% from January 1, 2015. The IMO also approved the cleaning of exhaust gas to reduce emissions to the same extent.

Emission Control Areas include the Baltic and North seas, the English Channel and the US and Canadian coast and inland waters.
