Yara actively responds to global challenges – and is positioned to make a difference. We succeed by pursuing a strategy that creates value for both owners and society at large.
Through our extensive knowledge and experience, we are in a unique position to develop viable business solutions that address major global challenges. We create impact by using economic success as a lever for change.
Sustainable value creation – and the ability to create impact – depend on competitive advantages. For Yara, these derive largely from our knowledge margin, global position and scale, and proven track record of operational excellence.
The key to all sustainable development is to combine economic, environmental and societal interests, and to create value – securing profitability and viability – as a fundament for responding to global challenges.
Yara creates impact in specific ways: through our core business operations, by leveraging our global position and knowledge, by improving the sustainability of our organization and offerings, and in an uncompromising approach to all compliance issues.
We aim at continuously improving our operations; in terms of operational excellence, innovation, research and development and maintaining a strict focus on industry leading performance, including in the areas of HESQ and Ethics and Compliance.
Beyond Yara’s own performance, we engage with external stakeholders to drive industry standards, enter into policy dialogues and partnerships, and launch initiatives with relevance to our three focal areas.
The Nexus challenges
Yara has identified three focal areas in which we are particularly well positioned to derive value for shareholders, customers and society at large: food security, resource management and environmental issues.
The focal areas have been identified by analyzing global megatrends and corresponding global challenges, and how these relate to Yara’s core competence and business. A key area is how to improve food security under the pressure of climate change, while competition for resources is increasing.
Agriculture causes about one quarter of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with land use change originating from agricultural expansion as the main culprit.
With close to a billion hungry people globally, a growing population and dietary changes driving increased demand, food production needs to be substantially increased over the next decades.
Yara advocates improved resource efficiency as the avenue towards a solution: More food must be grown on existing cropland, using inputs with greater precision to reduce losses, improve productivity and gain higher yields.
We can contribute by providing our extensive crop and soil knowledge, our low-carbon mineral fertilizers, and tools and solutions to support farmers.
Through global engagement, developing technologies and sharing knowledge, we impact on policy frameworks, industry processes and management practices. We have engaged in a number of processes, entered partnerships and initiated projects, contributing to green growth.
Our global position allows us to participate in policy dialogues, and serves as a platform for forging partnerships and presenting initiatives. These include taking part in the development of the New Vision for Agriculture roadmap, launching the Agricultural Growth Corridor concept, and supporting the Sahara Forest Project. Also, we have entered into an extensive engagement in Africa, to promote and support the African Green Revolution.
Our industry platform allows us to influence industry developments and best practices. It is also the basis for providing concepts for sustainable agriculture and environmental solutions. These include our Crop Nutrition Concept and Precision Farming Tools, which impact agricultural productivity and food security. Also, our novel N2O Catalyst Technology is the foundation for our Carbon Footprint Guarantee.
