Yara and sustainability

Green Growth

Yara is guided by its mission to responsibly feed the world and protect the planet and its strategic approach of creating value through business performance combined with targeted engagement – committing to sustainable agriculture and green growth.

Green growth is commonly conceived as achieving economic growth and social development consistent with environmental protection, and using natural resources within their carrying capacity .

Satisfying future demand for agricultural products requires improved productivity and resource use efficiency, directly linking agriculture to the concept of green growth.

Yara’s engagement for increased efficiency runs throughout the parts of the value chain in which we are involved; from minimizing waste and improving the carbon footprint of our production processes, to sophisticated logistics and world class safety performance, all the way to providing farmers with tools, tailored products and professional advice to optimize crop nutrient use in the fields.

In addition to this, Yara’s Environmental Solutions is a fast growing business segment that leverages our expertise in nitrogen chemistry and industrial competence to address environmental issues in our customers’ processes.

Yara’s growth ambitions are founded on creating value – for customers and shareholders as well as for society at large. We constantly work to improve performance by driving innovation, research and development, by engaging in partnerships and initiatives and by extensive engagement in stakeholder relations to advocate more sustainable solutions.

Growth Strategies
Green growth is an essential part of sustainable development. Economic growth is imperative to cope with global challenges such as increasing demands for food and fiber, as well as for land and water. However, growth must be managed so that pressure on the environment is reduced.

As a roadmap to sustainable development, green growth has to be inclusive; making sure there is a shared benefit from the value created. Promoting the African Green Revolution – increasing food production by including smallholders in the value chain – is an example of how an inclusive green growth approach is feasible. Establishing Agricultural Growth Corridors – adopting the green corridor approach – is an example of how green growth principles can be introduced.

Green Solutions
Yara aims to be a global leader in sustainable agriculture and environmental solutions. Agriculture is a key sector in driving growth in many parts of the world. With a conscious approach to farm and resource management, optimizing soil fertility and yields using low carbon footprint fertilizers is an engine for green growth. Yara advocates improved productivity by increasing resource efficiency as key contributions towards achieving green growth.  We provide concepts and tools to help farmers achieve improved performance.

Yara engages in policy debates and enters partnerships to achieve sustainable productivity gains. We advocate tools, products and solutions which address food security and climate change in parallel. We have developed products and solutions that underpin sustainable agriculture and green growth.

As the world leading provider of mineral fertilizers and crop knowledge, our main effort has been to improve productivity through solutions based on agronomic expertise, tailoring solutions to specific crops and to local growing conditions. Yara’s Crop Nutrition Concept supports increasing yields while improving resource use efficiency, thereby also reducing the carbon footprint.

The latter is achievable also by using our low-carbon fertilizers, in some markets offered with a Carbon Footprint Guarantee where an independent third party confirms greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the production process. We promote precision farming, offering tools to help growers optimize their resource input in order to increase yields, and – consequently – their profitability.

Our Environmental Solutions which counteract pollution also support green growth – by reducing damage to nature and hazards to humans.
