Yara's activities are all guided by the principles of product stewardship as set forth by Fertilizers Europe and the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA).
Based on a clear commitment to promote sustainability and safe practices throughout the life cycle of fertilizers, they ensure that proper care is taken along the entire value chain, from product development and sourcing of raw materials, through production, storage and distribution, to sales, delivery and application.
Assessment of health, safety, environmental and security impacts of products and services covers all life cycle stages.
All Yara's operations in Europe are in full compliance with the requirements of the Fertilizers Europe Product Stewardship Program.
Outside Europe, Yara is implementing the IFA Protect & Sustain product stewardship program, which was launched in early 2011. Yara has participated in the development of this initiative, and five non-European Yara units have already received the IFA Protect & Sustain certificates.
Remaining units will follow suit, as Yara aims to have all operations outside Europe certified to the program. Current status of the certifications is available at the Environmental Management Approach section.

In 2013 Yara recorded no incidents of non-compliance with regulations or voluntary codes concerning health and safety impacts of its products and services.

All Yara's fertilizers, chemical products, and their raw materials are regulated by national or international fertilizer or chemical law.
All products manufactured in or imported into the EU/EEA are in compliance with the European chemicals regulation REACH. Chemical compliance is also high on the agenda globally.
A global Yara network is in place for chemical compliance and a formal chemical compliance check is included in the purchasing and sales process.
In addition to information about nutrient content and the correct use as a fertilizer, products are classified and labeled according to the European CLP Regulation in EU/EEA markets.
Globally, Yara classifies and labels its products following either the European CLP regulation or the local legislation, e.g. in North America the American OSHA and EPA standards.
In line with changes in chemical legislation in many countries of the world, Yara will also introduce classification and labeling of its products according to the UN Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals.
Additional local information requirements, such as local fertilizer regulations or food and feed regulations when relevant, are managed by local Yara units.
Yara is the first fertilizer company that has launched a campaign on the carbon footprint of fertilizer products. "The Carbon Footprint Guarantee" is focusing on the markets in the Nordic region, to meet the obligations for climate branding of food products set by Swedish food industry organizations. As an additional environmental goal, calculation of carbon footprint for Yara's remaining main fertilizer products is ongoing.
Yara aims for all manufacturing plants to be certified to the three widely recognized standards ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. This process is nearing completion in all but the newest Yara plants. A number of units also have certifications to other standards in place, such as for energy management and, not least, food and feed safety systems.

Yara has not identified any material non-compliance with regulations or voluntary codes concerning product and service information and labeling.
PR5 - Practices related to customer satisfaction, including results of surveys measuring customer satisfaction
Examples of type of survey conducted are brand and market surveys, collecting feedback directly from customers and farmers, web questionnaires and market meetings. Our production units collect feedback from customers on an annual basis. Surveys are mainly CATI interviews and organized centrally by corporate branding. The methodology aims to identify opportunities to improve and measure satisfactory performance.
PR6 - Programs for adherence to laws, standards and voluntary codes related to marketing communications, including advertising, promotion and sponsorship
Yara has for several years been committed to Fertilizers Europe's Product Stewardship program, which includes procedures on production, transport, storage, and also marketing and sales of fertilizers. Yara is certified to this program by third party auditors on a triennial basis. The company also adheres to the EU REACH regulation. Yara has developed a global brand strategy which includes guidelines on communication ethics. These have been distributed to our units and are available electronically.
Fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate, in Yara's product portfolio, is banned in certain countries; however Yara does not sell Fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate in these markets.
