A breath of fresh air: Yara's commitment to a healthier planet

Air pollution claims 6.7 million lives yearly- one every five seconds. On this International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, we take a closer look at the steps being taken to combat air pollution and highlight Yara’s commitment to creating a healthier planet.

“The silent killer”

Air pollution is often dubbed 'a silent killer' for a reason. One of its most harmful components is nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are emitted primarily from internal combustion engines (ICE). These toxic gases contribute to a range of health problems, from respiratory illnesses to cardiovascular diseases. Given the grave impact of NOx, it is imperative to prevent its release into the atmosphere.

Global progress in combating NOx emissions

Over the past few decades, significant strides have been made in reducing air pollution. Governments have implemented stricter emission regulations, and industries have responded positively by adopting advanced technologies. Today, 72 million vehicles around the world utilize AdBlue® diesel exhaust fluid to clean their emissions. Thanks to these advanced exhaust after-treatment systems, NOx emissions from the transport sector have dropped dramatically.

However, despite the rapid transition towards zero-emission vehicles, projections indicate that 61 million gasoline and diesel vehicles will still be sold in the EU alone by 2050. This underscores the continued need for effective emission control solutions.

Yara’s DeNOx solutions: A global impact

Yara is at the forefront of efforts to reduce NOx emissions, using innovative nitrogen-based solutions. Through products like OptiSpray and Air1 (AdBlue® by Yara) for diesel vehicles and machinery, and NoxCare for industrial complexes such as power plants, Yara is removing more than 1.5 million tons of NOx from the atmosphere every year.

Yara Environmental Technologies has successfully installed over 600 DeNOx systems across the globe. These systems are continuously working to clean dangerous emissions from various sources, including gas-, oil-, coal-, and biomass-fired power plants, waste incinerators, and cement and steam reforming plants.

Most recently, Yara played a pivotal role in maintaining excellent air quality in Paris during this summer’s Olympic Games. As the population almost tripled for some intense weeks, Yara’s solutions coped with the increased wastewater load, both in terms of treatment capacity and odor control.

Together for clean air

From harmful NOx gases to offensive odors, Yara Industrial Solutions offers comprehensive remedies for a wide range of air pollution challenges. Whether it’s onshore or offshore, vehicular or stationary, rural or urban- Yara is making a tangible difference. As we face the ongoing challenges of air pollution, Yara's message is clear: we can, and must, come together for clean air.

Air pollution is the biggest environmental health risk of our time.

  • Exposure can lead to stroke, heart and lung diseases, cancer and more.
  • Air pollution causes approximately 6.7 million premature deaths annually.
  • 99% of people breathe unsafe air.
  • 7 September is the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. Launched by the UN General Assembly in 2019, it champions the increasing interest in clean air and the need to improve air quality.
