What are Yara Climate ChoiceTM Fertilizers?
Our new portfolio of lower carbon fertilizers introduced in 2024 has, as further explained below, a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to the corresponding portfolio of Yara products produced by using fossil sources and more conventional processes. Yara Climate Choice fertilizers are produced using state-of-the-art technologies that remove a large part of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the production of nitrate-based mineral fertilizers.
The carbon reduction is product-related and achieved by Yara's changes to the production process. This allows food companies to reduce their scope 3 upstream emissions in an effortless way and thereby lower the product carbon footprint of their own products. Almost all our current range of nitrate-based fertilizers can now be produced also as lower carbon fertilizers, including Yara Powerbrands such as: YaraMila, YaraBela, YaraRega, YaraTera (with certain exceptions), and YaraLiva. Products excluded are mainly urea-based fertilizers
Lower Carbon fertilizers
The Yara Climate Choice Lower Carbon fertilizers are produced using technology that takes a large part of the carbon out from the production process and permanently stores it, preventing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
These nitrate-based fertilizers include the benefit of a very significant reduction in N2O emissions at the production stage through the use of N2O catalytic abatement technology in the nitric acid production and are produced with natural gas with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), thus reducing the fertilizer product carbon footprint by 35-75% (the actual percentage reduction depending on the product’s nitrogen content and extent of CCS employed) compared to the same Yara fertilizer produced without CCS.
Renewable-based Lower Carbon fertilizers
The renewable-based Yara Climate Choice Lower Carbon fertilizers are produced using renewable ammonia derived from different sources, e.g. electrolysis of water using renewable electricity, or from renewable natural gas.
Our Yara Climate Choice products in the “renewable-based” category replace natural gas as the main feedstock in the ammonia production process with renewable sources and are also produced using N2O catalytic abatement. The end-result is an aggregate reduction of the fertilizer product carbon footprint by up to 95% (the actual percentage reduction depending on the product’s nitrogen content) compared to the same Yara fertilizer produced from natural gas.
Verified by a third party
As explained above, both CCS-based and renewable-based lower carbon fertilizer products have a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to the same fertilizer produced with fossil natural gas and without CCS.
Product Carbon Footprints of the Yara Climate Choice products are verified by an independent third party according to recognized “Fertilisers Europe” PCF methodology, thereby creating appropriate credibility in Yara’s claims. The PCF documentation is made available by Yara according to the customers’ requirements. This enables them to demonstrate the lower carbon attributes of their own products, produced using these Yara Climate Choice fertilizers as well as using this information for sustainability reporting.
Reduced Product Carbon Footprint for crops and related food items
Based on years of industry expertise and customer relations, and if requested by our customers, Yara is also able to provide estimates for the anticipated carbon footprint reductions for crops and food items that can potentially be achieved following a switch to Yara Climate Choice™ fertilizers.
